Shannon has a love-affair with dragons…fantasy ones that is but, like an imagined dragon, there is something quite ‘magical’ and ‘otherworldly’ about these striking Eastern Water Dragons that drew her in! The combination of those sharp watchful eyes and delectably intimidating feature spines made this an incredibly enjoyable piece to work on!

The Eastern Water Dragon is Australia’s largest dragon lizard, found in eastern Australia. It is more often heard than seen as it dives into the water when disturbed, swimming to the bottom to wait for the danger to pass and staying under for up-to an hour if necessary. Water dragons are different from all other lizards – with four well-developed limbs, each with five claws, and a tail that is two thirds longer than the body which is flattened on the sides to assist with swimming. It is, however, still a good tree climber and likes to laze on branches overhanging the water or basking on riverbanks and rocks. The tail is capable of regeneration when lost and, furthermore, regenerated tails can also grow back when severed (amazing!). Males defend a territory and a harem of females, carrying out an impressive series of head bobs and arm waves to discourage other intruding males. The females are polyandrous – that is, they will mate with multiple males and when they lay a clutch, there may be several genetic fathers present in the eggs. Females also have an incredibly complex hierarchy, policed by the largest females who will even be so bold as to tell the much larger males off. Freshly hatched dragons look like miniature replicas of the adults and are able to fend for themselves as soon as they hatch. Conservation status: ‘Least Concern’.
